Embers in bucket start fire that destroys family’s home

A single-story home at 913 E. Jamestown Road set afire by stray embers from a bucket on the back porch was gutted by the blaze at about 11 p.m. Thursday.

The two residents were asleep when the fire detectors woke them, said Jamestown Fire Chief David Jones. Both people and their two dogs made it out okay.

One of the homeowners had cleaned out their wood burner that evening and put the coals on a bucket at the back porch, Jones said. The fire crept up a back wall and got into the eaves of the attic.

Firefighters got the blaze under control within about 30 to 35 minutes, Jones said. The house is a total loss but the family had insurance. They are staying with relatives.

Responding to the fire were Jamestown, Hempfield, West Salem, and Fallowfield volunteer fire departments.
