Police advise residents to beware of mail thefts
HERMITAGE — Hermitage police are advising residents not to put mail in their mail boxes at night because of a rash of thefts of mail.
Monday, police received reports of thefts from mail boxes from Lori Lane, Golden Run, Golfwood Drive, Donald Road and Lisa Court.
It appears someone is driving around at night looking for mail flags, police said.
Meadville man dies after tractor flips on him
CRAWFORD COUNTY — A Meadville man died Sunday after the tractor he was using to haul tree trunks flipped in the air and landed on top of him in a Crawford County field, police said.
Terry Lee Williams, 60, was towing three cut trees at about 3 p.m. through a field in Spring Township when one of the trees caught the trunk of a standing tree, police said.
The front end of the tractor then flipped into the air and landed on Williams, police said.
Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by Crawford County deputy coroner Jay Parker, police said.
Man hurt in motorcycle crash in critical condition
SHARPSVILLE — A Greenville-area man was still in critical condition Tuesday at a Pittsburgh hospital after a motorcycle crash Sept. 16 in Sharpsville, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Tom Holliday, 30, of 605 Mercer Road, Hempfield Township, crashed his motorcycle about 1 a.m. into a utility pole at Walnut Street and Mercer Avenue, police said.
Holliday was initially flown to Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, for treatment of chest injuries, police said.
He has since been transferred to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where he was in critical condition Tuesday morning, a spokeswoman said.
Police said Holliday wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Crash victims released from Pittsburgh hospital
PINE TOWNSHIP — Three people injured in a crash Oct. 1 in Pine Township have been released from UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, a spokeswoman said.
Scott L. Grossman, 27, of Grove City, was heading west at about 9:30 a.m. on state Route 208 when he crossed the center of the road and his vehicle hit a garbage truck, police said.
Grossman’s minivan went off the road and hit a tree, while the garbage truck hit a fence and utility pole, police said.
Passengers Jerry Grossman, 73, and Gloria Grossman, 56, both of Grove City, were also released, the spokeswoman said.
