Rollover on I-79 claims Butler County man
SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP — A Butler County man was killed in a rollover accident at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 79 in Springfield Township, police said.
Nathan Kilmer, 33, West Sunbury, was southbound with Melissa Kilmer and three child passengers, police said.
The Jeep Kilmer was driving swerved into another southbound vehicle, went out of control, and hit an embankment on the median, rolling several times, police said. Both Nathan and Melissa Kilmer were thrown from the vehicle.
Nathan Kilmer was pronounced dead and Melissa Kilmer was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, where a spokeswoman said she was in fair condition.
The three child passengers, ages 6, 8, and 10, were not injured.
Daniel Braun, 18, Pittsburgh, was driving the second vehicle that the Jeep ran into and neither he nor his 17-year-old Jefferson, Pa., passenger were injured.
Man, 19, gets jail time for sex with girl, 12
GREENVILLE — A 19-year-old Greenville man will spend 215 days to 23 months behind bars for having sex with a 12-year-old Greenville-area girl numerous times since August 2007, police said.
Joseph Michael Pomponio, of 61 Porter Road, pleaded guilty in May to felony statutory sexual assault and was sentenced Tuesday by Common Pleas Judge Christopher J. St. John.
Police received a report in December that Pomponio had engaged in illegal activities with the girl and during an interview found out about the sex.
His original charges also included rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and aggravated indecent assault of a child.
Pomponio was also sentenced to three years’ probation.
Police will stress seatbelt importance Monday night
HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP — Hempfield Township and Greenville-West Salem Township police will distribute information from 8 p.m. to midnight Monday on Hadley Road in Hempfield to stress the importance of seatbelt use, especially at night.
From Monday through Aug. 17, PennDOT, Buckle Up Pennsylvania and police departments across the state are conducting Operation Nightlife, an enforcement effort aimed at increasing seatbelt use between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Mercer County roads set for paving, resurfacing
MERCER COUNTY — PennDOT announced road projects under way or soon to begin in the county.
• Interstate 79 — Bituminous patching, centerline joint rehabilitation, and line painting that will result in lane restrictions. Work is set to be finished by late August. HRI Inc. of State College is performing the work for $595,000 with all funds coming from the state.
• Dock Street between Connelly Boulevard and state Route 718 in Sharon — paving.
• Mercer Avenue, between Maple Drive and U.S. Route 62 in Hermitage — paving.
• Pulaski Road, between the Lawrence County line and state Route 18 in Shenango Township — paving.
• Bedford Road, between county line and state Route 718 in Shenango Township — paving.
• Bestwick Road, between state Route 318 and U.S. Route 62 in East Lackawannock Township — paving.
Traffic will be restricted with flag-person-controlled lane restrictions during daylight hours. Wide loads will be detoured.
Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc., Grove City, will perform the work for $1.8 million, with all funding coming from the state.

Storms rumble through parts of Mercer County
