Area’s transportation subject of forums

SHENANGO VALLEY — Regional transportation and planning agencies, including Shenango Valley Shuttle Service, will hold a public forum on a plan to coordinate services in Mercer County and Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio at 10 a.m. Thursday at Mercer County Regional Council of Governments, 2496 Highland Road, Hermitage.

The plan focuses on the elderly, the disabled and people with low incomes.

Mercer County Regional Planning Commission; Western Reserve Transit Authority, Youngstown; Niles-Trumbull Transit System; and Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, Youngstown, are cooperating on the plan.

Forums also will be held Tuesday, one at 10 a.m. at Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority, Warren, and another at 1:30 p.m. in the Eastgate office.

People who attend the forums will be asked to describe what problems they are having with transportation, what is working well, and what improvements would be helpful.

Mercer, Mahoning and Trumbull counties are lumped together for census purposes and share a pot of money given annually for public transportation agencies.

Federal Transit Administration is requiring that the plan be developed, and the plan will be needed for agencies that apply for federal funds that target services for the elderly, the disabled and people with low incomes.
