WEST SALEM TOWNSHIP —
Gerardo Hernandez said he was cooking hot dogs Monday afternoon when his daughter told him the house was on fire.
He and his three children were downstairs when the fire started in an upstairs bedroom at about 2 p.m.
“I found myself struggling ... I didn’t know what to do,” Hernandez said.
He and his children, ages 13, 4 and 3, were able to make it outside safely.
They sat in a sport-utility vehicle as firefighters mopped up the scene at 262 Coal Hill Road in West Salem Township.
West Salem Township Fire Chief Bill Brown said the cause hadn’t been determined but it wasn’t suspicious.
It burned one of the kid’s bedroom upstairs, Brown said. “It destroyed the room and contents.”
Hernandez said he was insured and would stay with nearby family.
West Salem volunteers were assisted by Greenville, Jamestown, Transfer and Hempfield Township fire departments.
