HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP —
A Hempfield Township man died Wednesday from injuries he suffered in a farm tractor accident.
Roy A. “Butch” Scott, 65, of 20 Scott Road, was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m. in the field where he’d been working, Mercer County Deputy Coroner John Libonati said.
Libonati said he believes the accident occurred between 7 and 8 a.m. and that Scott likely died within minutes.
Hempfield Township police patrolman Dan McCloskey said police were called at 6:41 p.m. to a field in the sub-100 block of West Methodist Road and found Scott.
McCloskey said Scott’s family became worried after he never came home for lunch and went looking for him.
Scott was brush-hogging and apparently had a problem with the tractor.
McCloskey said he fixed the tractor and as he got back on he bumped it back into gear and fell off.
Libonati said Scott wasn’t in the seat yet and landed on the side of the tractor. He died of blunt force injuries to the chest from landing on the metal and was not run over by the tractor, Libonati said.
McCloskey said the tractor kept going after Scott fell and eventually hit a tree.
Scott was a 1964 graduate of Greenville High School and a lifetime beef farmer. He had worked as a welder and in the maintenance department of a farm equipment store.
Libonati said he did not believe Scott had a cell phone with him while he was in the field but likely wouldn’t have been able to call for help.
Officials recommend people farming alone keep a cell phone, as even an old one can still be used to call 911.
