HERMITAGE — A 45-year-old Hermitage man was in critical condition Sunday at the burn unit of Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a Fourth of July fireworks accident at his home.
A hospital spokesman said Vincent Fustos of 4835 Anne Lane was in critical condition at the hospital.
Hermitage police said Fustos was flown to the hospital after suffering severe burns in an explosion and fire that ensued when he was making a firework with gunpowder in the basement of his Hermitage home.
Calls to the residence weren’t answered Sunday.
The Fustos home is barely visible from the road and wasn’t visibly damaged, but police described the damage as severe.
Police said Fustos was in the basement at about 10:30 p.m. making a firework with flash powder when there was an explosion.
Family members helped him outside and the explosion sparked a fire in the house, police said.
Police weren’t releasing further information Sunday.
