Cleopal Thompson

Baptist church member had local sister, relatives

JOLIET, Ill. — Cleopal Thompson of Joliet, received her Crown of Glory at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010. She was 80.

Ms. Thompson was born Dec. 1, 1929, in Tiptonville, Tenn., to Luma and Christine Wrice Thompson, both of whom preceded her in death.

Cleopal was educated in Tennessee, then moved in 1948 to Joliet, where she worked at Central/National Cleaners as a presser until she was forced to retire due to health problems.

Cleopal loved the Lord very much and leaned on Him through all her medical trials.

In 1977, she joined Second Baptist Church of Joliet, where she was a member of the adult Sunday school class, served on the Woman’s Fellowship Group and usher board and supported the youth department.

She was always a joy to her family and had a generous and caring heart. She loved watching movies, listening to music, cooking, collecting cookbooks, recipes and laughter.

Cleopal was an honest and up-front person; you always knew where you stood with her; she would always let you know what was on her mind.

She leaves to cherish her memory: two loving sisters, Faustine Johnson, Sharon; and Georgia Taylor, Chicago, Ill.; three nieces, Pauline Roberts and her husband the Rev. Willie James Roberts; and Janice Graham and her husband Terry, all Farrell; and April Brown and her husband Ron, Sharon; two nephews, Arthur D. Chambers and his wife Cindy; and Richard V. Chambers, all Sharon ; a host of friends including her special friends, Helen and Fred Gibson; and Ruby McDaniels, all Joliet; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.

Besides her parents, Cleopal’s sister, Cornice Eddings; her niece, Jacqueline Chambers; and a great-niece, Vaughnda R. Chambers-McCray, also preceded her in death.

Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to time of service Tuesday, March 9 in Second Baptist Church, Joliet, followed by funeral services at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Larry V. Tyler officiating. Interment was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Elmhurst Cemetery, Joliet.
