A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday for Joseph Benes, 340 Dutch Lane, Hermitage. He died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday (2-6-10) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 83.
Mr. Benes was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Sharon to Joseph and Agnes Mondich Benes.
Joe attended Sharon-area schools.
Prior to World War II, he worked at the Brooklyn Navel Ship Yard in New York as a machinist. He retired in 1985 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. after 45 years. Through his employment at Westinghouse, he attended several technical schools.
In the late 1950s, he built a small apartment complex on Dutch Lane in Hermitage, which he owned and managed with his wife.
Joe was an avid fisherman and was very proficient in the art of fly tying. He was very proud of this and taught his sons this art. He also loved to hunt.
Joe and Mary Ann traveled with their children throughout the United States, particularly in the west and Canada. After their children left home, he continued to travel with his wife.
He was a Democratic committeeman in Hermitage and a member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage.
He was married on July 8, 1950, to the former Mary Ann Andrasko, who preceded him in death Dec. 22, 2009.
He is survived by: two sons, David J. Benes and his wife Kemily, Smithfleld, Maine; and Joseph J. Benes and his wife Karen, Transfer; three daughters, Becky and her husband Michael O�Donnell, Parker, Colo.; Patricia Benes, Falls Church, Va.; and Ruth Holt, Ellwood City; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Stephen Benes; and two sisters, Mary Rose Manyin and Clara Purich.
