Eula G. ‘Dolly’ Unangst

Retired teacher enjoyed singing and quilting


Eula G. “Dolly” Unangst of 3549 Saranac Drive, Transfer, passed away at 1:35 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township, after an extended illness. She was 86.

A lifetime Transfer resident, Mrs. Unangst was born Tuesday, April 17, 1923, in Sharon to George N. “Deeke” Amon and Beryl Atkinson Amon.

She was an alumna of the former Transfer High School. After her graduation from Slippery Rock Teacher’s College, Dolly began a 31-year career in education, teaching in a one-room school in Hickory Township and substituting in various other schools in Mercer County until she secured a full-time position at South Pymatuning (Township) Elementary School. There, she taught third and first grade students, retiring in 1977.

Dolly enjoyed singing and as a member of Zion’s United Church of Christ in Transfer, she was active as a church organist, was a choir director and played piano for the Sunday school.

Dolly and her husband, Harry H. “Droop” Unangst, with whom she celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary in 1994, traveled with best friends to all states in the U.S. including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as neighboring countries, Canada and Mexico. Harry passed away in 1999.

Dolly enjoyed singing and entertaining at local senior citizens and retirement facilities with a group known as “The Guys and Doll.”

She was an avid seamstress, made a lot of her own clothes and had a special fondness of quilts, the last of which she finished in 2008.

Surviving are: a daughter, Rebecca Unangst, Transfer; two sons, Gerald “Jerry” Unangst and his wife Diane, Transfer; and Bruce E. Unangst and his wife Shirley, Louisiana; four grandchildren, Senator Julie Quinn, Wendy Eckles, Bruce E. Unangst II and Christopher Unangst; and seven great-grandchildren, Blaise Eckles; Spencer and Ashton Quinn; and Bralee, J. Bentley, Ersalee Abigail and Sophia Jolie Unangst.

Besides her husband, Dolly was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Elenor Waldorf; and a brother, Basil Amon.

Service: Funeral service at 6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Oerter, pastor of Zion’s United Church of Christ, Transfer, officiating.

Interment: Transfer Cemetery.
