A memorial service will be held Monday for Ruth L. Elerby, formerly of 5 Cathedral Drive, Farrell, and longtime resident of Sharon and Farrell. She passed away at 3:04 p.m. Wednesday (11-18-09) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. She was 106.
Mrs. Elerby was born July 6, 1903, in Oakdale, Pa., to Stonewall Jackson Logan and Betty C. White Logan.
She attended Sharon schools.
During the World War years, Mrs. Elerby participated in the Sewing Project in Sharon.
A member since she was 10 years old of Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Sharon, she belonged to the choir, was a charter member of the Courtesy Club and was a member of the former Eveready Club.
In 2003, Mrs. Elerby was honored with the Charm Fischer Award from Keystone Blind Association, proclaimed as leading a “lifestyle that reflects a level of independence that sets a standard for other blind or visually impaired individuals.”
Surviving are: a daughter, Betty W. Dooms, Sharon; two daughters-in-law, Ernestine Elerby and Elsie Elerby, both Sharon; six grandchildren, Howard Elerby and his wife Janice, Pittsburgh; Gary Elerby and his wife Kathy, Farrell; Robert Dooms and Patricia Elerby, both Sharon; Barbara Elerby, Harrisburg; and Phillip Elerby, Jacksonville, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, James Elerby and Jared Elerby, both Pittsburgh; Gena Foutner and her husband Henry, Detroit; and Alexandra “Allie” Gilchrist, Sharon; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Elerby was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, James “Sonny” Elerby Jr. and Robert Elerby; five brothers; and a sister.
