John J. Schibli, D.O., of Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday (11-17-09) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a 10-year battle with cancer. He was 52.
Dr. Schibli was born May 11, 1957, in Sharon to Peter and Anna Braunstein Schibli.
He was a 1975 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage, and earned a bachelor of science degree in microbiology in 1979 from Pennsylvania State University. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983 and completed his post-graduate training at UPMC Horizon.
Dr. Schibli practiced medicine in his own office in Mercer from 1984 until 1999, when he joined The Primary Health Network. He saw patients in the Mercer office from 1999 until last week.
He served on numerous hospital committees and was chief of staff several times.
He was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Church, Sharon, and previously served as president of the church council.
John was a wine connoisseur, loved to travel and took great pleasure at making others happy. He often dressed as Winnie the Pooh on Halloween at his office and was known to show up at nursing homes as Santa with gifts for the residents.
John is survived by: his parents, Peter and Anna Schibli, Hermitage; a brother, Frank Schibli and his wife Pamela, New Lenox, Ill.; and a sister, Diana and her husband Jeff Kase, Hermitage.
He doted on his niece, Erin Schibli; his nephew, Joshua Kase; and his companion and special friend, Jill DiCaro.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Box 5037, New Castle, PA 16105; American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20004; or St. Anthony Church Chapel Fund, 804 Idaho St., Sharon, PA 16146.
