Raphael “Rae” McGhee of Hubbard passed away at 12:50 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a brief illness. She was 76.
Ms. McGhee was born April 22, 1933, in Hubbard, the sixth daughter of James and Lucy Carano Vernell.
She graduated from Hubbard High School in 1951.
Rae worked at Golden Dawn Foods/Peter J. Schmitt Warehouse in Sharon for 26 years. She also worked at Farrell Golden Dawn and P.I.&I; Motor Express in Masury, before retiring in 1995.
In her younger years, she enjoyed dancing and bowling. Her greatest joy was spending time with Ron and her children and grandchildren.
Rae leaves: a loving companion, Ronald Glaser, with whom she made her home; two sons, Byron McGhee III and his wife Lou Ann, Brookfield; and Jeffrey McGhee and his wife Patricia, Kinsman; two daughters, Deborah and her husband Thomas Sanford, Hartford; and Cindy and her husband Robert Fithian, Hermitage; nine grandchildren, Dawn, Jeffrey, Madelyn, Sarah, Zachary and Katelin McGhee; Nicole and Ian Sanford; and Rebecca Fithian; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Andrew, Callie, Macey and Shawn; two sisters, Julia Smaldino, Austintown, Ohio; and Rita Bolchalk, Hubbard; a brother, James Vernell and his wife Claire; and a sister-in-law, Mary Vernell, all also Hubbard; and a special niece, Linda Sisco Brown, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Rae was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Louis and John Vernell; and three sisters, Ann Dunn, Carmel Sisco DePaul and Louise Borecki.
The family requests memorial contributions be made in Rae’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
