CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Venango County — Richard “Dick” E. Powell, a resident of 2243 Bredinsburg Road, Cranberry Township, died peacefully at 4:28 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, in his home surrounded by his loving family and friends, following an extended illness. He was 69.
Mr. Powell was born Oct. 10, 1940, in Mercer, a beloved son of Samuel H. and M. Eileen Hollibaugh Powell.
He was a 1957 graduate of Lakeview High School.
Upon graduation from high school, he proudly served his country in the Marine Corps during peacetime.
After his military service, Dick was employed for many years as a rail breaker at Franklin Steel.
As his health permitted, he was an avid outdoorsman; Dick enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever he was able. He enjoyed gardening around his home as well as the company of his beloved dogs, Jesse and Katie.
He also enjoyed the fun times he was able to share with his family and many friends.
Dick was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Jesse Greer Post 1835 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 328, both Franklin.
On Dec. 12, 1986, he married the love of his life, the former Barbara J. Reisinger of Victory Heights. They shared a loving friendship and an enjoyable life together with their blended families and many friends.
Dick’s sparkling personality will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, James Powell, Sandy Lake; his daughter, Kimberly Powell, Stoneboro; and his stepdaughters, Barbara Harrah, Utica; and Laurie McNany and her husband Greg, Emlenton.
Also surviving are: his grandchildren, Derek Powell, Brandon and Jamie Harrah; and Kenton and Ashton McNany; a great-grandson, Brandt McNany; his stepmother, Clara Belle Fellnagle, Greenville; three sisters, Lorna Hardin, Woodinville, Wash.; Ruth Keith and her husband Ron, Columbia, Md.; and Kathy Lowers and her husband Gary, Transfer; and two brothers, Lewis Thomas and his wife Kim, Kennerdell; and Steve Ketcham and his wife Jeannie, Altoona.
He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Bernice Powell; his sisters, Connie (Thomas) Schwartz and Bev (Powell) Shoff; and a nephew, Sean Shoff, all tragically killed as a family from injuries sustained in a traffic accident on Nov. 16, 1974.
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars Jesse Greer Post 1835 in care of Ray Burke, 411 9th St.; or Visiting Nurses of Venango County Foundation (Hospice Program), 491 Allegheny Blvd., both Franklin, PA 16323.
