Leonard J. Rosenberg

Business owner, consultant was active in community

Leonard J. Rosenberg of Hermitage passed away at 1:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, in his home after an extended illness. He was 90.

Mr. Rosenberg was born March 22, 1919, in Farrell to Jacob and Wilma Rosenberg.

He graduated from Farrell High School in 1937.

In 1942, Mr. Rosenberg joined the Army and served in the European theater, earning a Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.

On June 17, 1945, Mr. Rosenberg married the former Harriett Lobl, who survives at home.

Leonard owned a wholesale meat packing business called Shenango Provisions, which was originally located in Sharon and then relocated to Farrell. Later, Mr. Rosenberg sold the business to Sharon Packing Co. and continued to the present to work part time as a consultant for that company.

Mr. Rosenberg was a very active member in the community as well. Originally a member of the B’nai Zion Synagogue in Farrell, Leonard helped merge the congregations into Temple Beth Israel, where he remained a member.

Mr. Rosenberg was a member of B’nai Brith and the Jewish War Vets; a member and past president of the Sharon Lions Club; a former member of Free and Accepted Masons Shenango Valley Lodge 810, Hermitage; a former chairman of the board for UPMC Horizon, Farrell; a former board of directors member for M&M; Bank; was on the home rule committee in Farrell; and oversaw the B’nai Brith Youth organization.

Leonard is survived by: his wife, at home; two children, Michael Rosenberg and his wife Barbara, Girard, Ohio; and Shelley Joltin and her husband Larry, Liberty Township, Trumbull County; seven grandchildren, Brauna Carl and her husband Louis, Springfield, Va.; Joshua Rosenberg and his wife Monica, Erie; Samara Rosenberg, Girard; Judd Rosenberg and his wife Amanda, Sharpsville; Benjamin Joltin and his wife Nicole, Streetsboro, Ohio; Adena McGowan and her husband Terry, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and Joseph Joltin and his wife Melanie, Garfield Heights, Ohio; and 11 great-grandchildren, Caroleena Rosenberg, Jared Rosenberg, Gabe Carl, Aliyah Joltin, Jacob Joltin, Amyah Rosenberg, Blaine Rosenberg, Alexander Joltin, Hayden Carl, Matthew Joltin and Vance Rosenberg.

He also leaves: many nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Robert Block, Chicago; and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Konigsburg, Virginia; and Sherry Berks and her husband Michael, Centerville, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mildred Block.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, Colonial Square, 1965 Shenango Valley Freeway, Suite 2, Hermitage, PA 16148; or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western Pennsylvania, The Gulf Tower, 707 Grant Street, 37th Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15219-1916.

Service: Funeral services at 3 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Mr. Michael Berks officiating.

Burial: To follow at Temple Beth Israel Cemetery, Hermitage.
