Richard B. “Dick” Heckman of 46 Oak St., Stoneboro, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday (10-26-09) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after short illness. He was 81.
Mr. Heckman was born June 8, 1928, in Stoneboro to Howard M. “Dutch” and Gladys Whitlatch Lean Heckman.
He was a 1947 graduate of the former Stoneboro High School. While in school and for some time later, he worked for his father at the Sterling Station in Stoneboro.
Dick worked at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. and Westrac of Mercer and then at General American Transportation Corp.’s former Masury plant. He retired in 1991 from the maintenance department of Lakeview High School.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Dick had been a member of the Stoneboro Volunteer Fire Co. and served on Stoneboro Borough Council. He had been president of the Lakeview Knothole League.
He loved to pick hickory nuts. In early years, he enjoyed camping on French Creek.
Dick was a great horse racing fan and loved hanging out at the Stoneboro Fairgrounds with the horsemen, where he was an official member of the Horseman’s Liars Club.
Most of all, Dick was a loving father and “grandpa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His wife, the former Mary Lou Rickard Beahan, whom he married May 5, 1955, preceded him in death June 17, 2008.
He is survived by: three sons, Daniel M. Beahan and his wife Barbara, Wake Forest, N.C.; Michael B. Heckman and his wife Brenda, Stoneboro; and Timothy B. Heckman, Chicago; four grandchildren, Joshua M. Heckman and his wife Janice, Stoneboro; Christopher Beahan, Falling Water, W.Va.; Kevin M. Beahan, Astoria, N.Y.; and Jared A. Heckman, on active duty with Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio; two great-grandchildren, Lydia Marie Heckman and Connor Heckman; and a brother, James W. Heckman and his wife Barb, Jackson Center.
Besides his wife, Dick was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, J. Duane “Lefty” Heckman and Dale Heckman.

Interment: With committal service at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.
