SENECA, Venango County — Anna Louise Guyton, a resident of 173 Evergreen Drive, Franklin, died peacefully at 1:10 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2010, in UPMC-Northwest, Seneca, after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer.
Miss Guyton was born in Mercer and raised in Stoneboro, a daughter of Paul Lawrence Guyton and Mary Frances Guyton.
Anna and her family moved from the Lakeview School District when she was a senior. She graduated from Franklin High School, where she was class salutatorian. Following high school, she enrolled at Slippery Rock University, where she graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in education. Anna then enrolled at Allegheny College in Meadville, where she earned a master’s degree in education.
After retirement, always wishing to further her education, she enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville for post-graduate studies.
For her working career, Anna spent 38è years as a teacher, retiring from Oil City Area School District.
Anna loved her students and was ahead of her time in the methods she used to help them learn. Her bubbly personality endeared her to everyone who knew her.
She was a member of The American Kennel Club, the PSEA (Pennsylvania State Education Association), PASR (Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees), NEA (National Education Association) and Seneca Reading Council.
Anna’s love of education was only surpassed by her love of animals, in particular, her Shetland sheep dogs.
She was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed studying fashion and home decorating in her spare time.
She is survived by her devoted Shetland sheep dog, Barney; and her beloved sisters, Mary K. Peterson, Franklin; and Cynthia J. King and her husband Phillip, Midlothian, Va. Also surviving are two nieces, Christine Carmichael and her children, Phillip and Kristen Carmichael, all Midlothian; and Mary Kathleen Wadley and her husband Matthew, Charlotte, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother-in-law, Peter U. Peterson; and her beloved Shetland sheep dogs, Thunder, Firelight, Montana and Diego.
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Kirtland Cancer Foundation, Box 108, Franklin, PA 16323; Venango County Humane Society, Box 1045, Oil City, PA 16301; or Polk United Methodist Church, 715 Main St., Polk, PA 16342.
