Melvin L. Sayers Jr.

1975 HHS grad, furnace operator was avid archer


Melvin L. Sayers Jr. of Hermitage passed away at 5 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, in his home surrounded by his family after an extended illness. He was 52.

Mr. Sayers was born May 18, 1957, in Sharon to Melvin L. Sayers Sr. and Violet Shearer Sayers.

Melvin graduated from Hickory High School, Hermitage, in 1975. 

On Oct. 18, 1980, Mr. Sayers married his wife, the former Celeste Tate.

For 18 years, he worked at Greenville Metal Co. and was a furnace operator.

Melvin was an avid archer and was a member of Gold ’N’ Grain Archery and Bill’s Field and Stream Archery.

He was also active in athletics, enjoying 5K runs and being a yearly participant in the “Pedal to the Lakes” charity, even for multiple sclerosis, which is a 150-mile bicycle event.

Mr. Sayers is survived by: his wife and a daughter, Nicole Sayers, both at home; his parents, Hermitage; his sister, Karen Sayers, Syracuse, N.Y.; his brothers-in-law, Albert G. Tate, Hermitage; Keith Tate, Slippery Rock; his sister-in-law, Debbie Staul and her husband Greg, Sharpsville; two stepsisters-in-law, Renee Neil, Hermitage; and Chris Moffett and her husband Dan, Sharpsville; a stepbrother-in-law, Brian Taylor and his wife Theresa, Brazil; his father-in-law, Albert W. Tate and his wife Gerry, Hermitage; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Calling hours: Private visitation in SAMPLE-O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME Inc., East State Street at North Oakland Avenue, Sharon. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to time of service Saturday, March 20, 2010, in Gentle Shepherd Church of the Nazarene, 3480 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage.

Service: Memorial service at 2 p.m. March 20 in the church with the Rev. Marty Gentzler, pastor, officiating.

Burial: Will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
