Dr. Herbert G. Gebert Jr.

Retired Greenville dentist served church, community

Dr. Herbert G. Gebert Jr., 341 E. Jamestown Road, West Salem Township, Greenville; and Sarasota, Fla., passed away at 12:05 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, in Mahoning Valley Hospital, Boardman, Ohio. He was 80.

Dr. Gebert was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Greenville to Herbert G. Gebert Sr. and Lucy M. Johnstone Gebert.

He was a 1945 graduate of the former Penn High School, Greenville, and a 1949 graduate of Thiel College, also Greenville, from which he earned a bachelor of science degree. He earned a doctorate of dental science degree as a 1952 alumnus of the University of Pittsburgh Dental School.

In 1953, Dr. Gebert began practice as a dentist in Greenville. In 1960, he was co-founder of Greenville Dental Clinic. He practiced dentistry in Greenville until his retirement on Sept. 30, 1994.

As a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, Dr. Gebert served on church council. He also belonged to Faith Lutheran Church in Sarasota.

He was a member and past master of Free and Accepted Masons Eureka Lodge 290, Greenville; and belonged to Scottish Rite’s New Castle Consistory, Zem Zem Shrine, Sahib Temple and Royal Order of Jesters No. 189, Sarasota.

Dr. Gebert belonged to Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Greenville Lions Club, Greenville Country Club, Friends of the Library, American Legion Post 140, and Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 145, all Greenville; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Hempfield Township.

He served on the board of directors of Greenville Community Chest, Greenville Recreation Board and Greenville School Board from 1966-72, having served as president from 1968-72; and Thiel College Alumni Board.

He was also a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at Thiel College.

Dr. Gebert was a member and past vice president of the American Dental Association of Pennsylvania; belonged to Ninth District Dental Society, Mercer County Dental Society and Fellow International College of Dentistry; was a past chairman of the Pennsylvania Dental Peer Review Committee; and a member of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity.

A Coast Guard veteran, Dr. Gebert served from 1945-46 during World War II and from 1952-53 in Korea in the Army Dental Corps.

His wife, the former Janet Minna Falck, whom he married June 26, 1952, survives at home in Greenville.

Also surviving are: two sons, H. George Gebert III and his wife Dixie, Columbus, Ohio; and Dr. Harry Gebert and his wife Janice, New Cumberland, Pa.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harry and Betty Falck, Sarasota, and their daughters; and two cousins, Dorothy Beck, California; and Lucy Sonne, Allentown, Pa.

He also leaves: his grandchildren, Jessica, Andrew, Timothy and Daniel Gebert; Anna Gebert Kober and her husband Maj. Erik Kober; Grace Gebert King and her husband Lamar; and Julia, Clara and Emma Gebert.

Dr. Gebert was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1 Trinity Place; Thiel College, College Avenue; or Greenville Area Public Library, 330 Main St., all Greenville 16125.
