Shenango Furnace retiree liked to garden, hunt, fish

---- — Thomas Vern Rainey of 505 Orangeville Road, West Salem Township, formerly of Sharpsville, where he was born and raised, passed away unexpectedly at 6:46 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2010, in the emergency room of Meadville Medical Center. He was 81.

He was born on Friday, April 19, 1929, in Sharpsville to Scott William Rainey and Janet Amelia Cornthwaite Rainey.

He attended Sharpsville schools.

An Army veteran, Mr. Rainey served from 1951-53, achieving a rank of corporal and having served in the Korean conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post 162, Sharpsville.

Mr. Rainey worked as an engineer at the former Shenango Furnace for 44 years, retiring in 1992.

He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing, and took great pride in “the pond” that he dug out by hand using a pick and shovel.

Thomas was the kind of person who would give a stranger the shirt off his back and his last dollar.

Surviving are: his daughter, Lori Rainey and her husband Eric, Arizona; six sons, William “Tom” Rainey, Sharon; Donald Rainey and Michael Rainey, both Greenville; Robert Rainey and his wife Angie, Brookfield; Douglas Rainey and his wife Brandi, Meadville; and Terry Rainey, Indiana; a sister, Alma Billen, Brookfield; a brother, Donald Rainey, Illinois; and 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bill Rainey, Floyd “Dean” Rainey and Dale Rainey; and three sisters, Ruth Osholvski, June Patterson and Shirley Kantner.

Service: Funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday (5-8-10) in the funeral home with the Rev. Lori Holstein Cotton, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Sharpsville, officiating.

Interment: West Side Cemetery, South Pymatuning Township. Full military honors will be rendered by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex, and American Legion Post 432, Wheatland.
