Students in Grove City Area School District competed in the state Academic Games Tournament March 9 and 10 at Geneva College in Beaver Falls. The students competed against schools from all over Western Pennsylvania in four games: LinguiSHTIK, Equations, Mr. President and Propaganda.
In the Senior Division, Dan Sprando and Chris Williams were on a first- place team for Mr. President and a second-place team for Equations with Chris undefeated in Equations. Chris was also undefeated in LinguiSHTIK with a perfect score. Matt O’Polka was on a second-place team in Propaganda.
In the Junior Division, the team of Conner Smith, Lauren Hyduchak and Chris Karcher placed second in Equations with Chris undefeated. The team of Conner, Lauren, Chris and Andy DiStasi placed second in Propaganda.
In the Middle Division, the team of Terry Williams, Elizabeth Paparone, Maria Wolinski, Steven Shi and Jesse Mortimer placed first in Mr. President, with Maria, Elizabeth and Jesse undefeated. The team of Terry, Maria, Steven, Jesse and Grant Craig placed first in Equations with Steven undefeated with a perfect score and Terry undefeated. The team of Terry, Elizabeth, Maria, Steven and Jesse also placed second in Propaganda with Maria undefeated. The team of Terry, Maria, Steven, Elizabeth and Grant placed second in LinguiSHTIK with Elizabeth undefeated. Also attending was Ellie Schiappa.
In the Elementary Division, a team including Tanner Glenn and Ethan Foley placed first in Mr. President. The team of Tanner, Joe Coulter, Addie Reynolds, Erika Filer and Bethany Hawke placed third in Propaganda. The team of Tanner, Addie, Erika, Grace Garner and Emma Lowers placed fifth in LinguiSHTIK, with Erika undefeated. Will Kemeny was undefeated in Equations and Propaganda.
The Academic Games League of America will be holding its annual National Academic Games Tournament in Cincinnati April 23-27. Grove City students attending will be elementary students Tanner Glenn, Will Kemeny and Joe Coulter; Middle Division students Elizabeth Paparone, Ellie Schiappa, Grant Craig, Jesse Mortimer, Steven Shi and Terry Williams; Junior Division players Michael Augspurger, Lauren Hyduchak, Conner Smith and Andy DiStasi; and Senior Division players Dan Sprando and Chris Williams. Students who qualified but will not be attending are: Grace Garner, Erika Filer, Addie Reynolds, Matt O’Polka and Maria Wolinski.
