ä Retired Sharon High School guidance counselor Sue McLaughlin will walk parents through the steps of preparing their child for life after high school, in college, tech or trade school, from choosing a major, selecting a school, and figuring out how to pay for it.

The free college workshop, sponsored by the Sharon High School Academic Booster’s Club, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in Room 102 at Sharon High. Junior and senior students and their parents are encouraged to attend.



Meeting

ä The Mercer County Civil War Roundtable will meet Dec. 8 to discuss “West Virginia, Wild and Wonderful!” addressing the state during the Civil War, its people, battles and events. James Carnes will present.

Doors open at 6:30. The program starts at 7 and will end about 9. All are welcome to attend the free event that meets at the society headquarters, 119 S. Pitt St., Mercer.

Support groups

ä Anorexia Nervosa & Bulimia Self-help Group meets from 5:30 to 6:45 every Thursday in the Founders Room of Church of Notre Dame, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage.

ä Emmanuel Christian Church, 4495 Greenville-Sandy Lake Road, Stoneboro, will hold grief support meetings at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month.

ä Mercer County Chapter of The Compassionate Friends will be joining hundreds of organized memorial services around the world, to light candles in remembrance of all the children who have died. The Compassionate Friends is national self-help support organization for families grieving the death of a child. This is the 13th annual Worldwide Candle Lighting, an event believed to be the largest mass candlelighting in the world.

The local candlelighting will be part of a special service at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 at Sharpsville First United Methodist Church, 148 E. Shenango St., and will feature music, readings, a slide presentation of the children, the lighting and snack time.

Holiday events

ä West Hill Ministries holds a Christmas Senior Citizen luncheon at noon Dec. 10 at First Baptist Church, 301 W. State St., Sharon.

Musical program presented by Sharon High School Tiger Kittens and Men of Note.

Reservations or transportation, call 724-347-7261 by Dec. 3. Lunch is free.

ä Mercer County Historical Society, 119 S. Pitt St., will display a toy collection in its lobby throughout the holiday season for visitors to enjoy with the theme, “Timeless Toys.”

ä The “Christmas in Victorian Mercer” open house at Mercer County Historical Society is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5, with a used book sale to be held in the museum at 119 S. Pitt St., Mercer. Refreshments and door prizes will be available, as well as guided tours of the museum.



Fundraiser

ä Books on local history and reprints of old photos of Mercer County will be available in the gift area of Mercer County Historical Society, 119 S. Pitt St., Mercer, with the “Mercer County PA Pictorial History (1800-2000)” available from Thanksgiving through Dec. 24 at a special cost of buy two at $25 each and receive a third copy free.

Those who buy a copy of “Mercer County One-Room School Story” at $35 will receive a free copy of the pictorial history.
