Heart Ball raises funds for research

MERCER COUNTY — The Heart Ball is the American Heart Association’s most prestigious annual fundraising event. Proceeds are used to support cardiovascular research, professional and public education, school site programs, and advocacy efforts throughout the year.

Co-chairing this year’s Mercer County Heart Ball are Bill and Lisa Hoodin.

Guest speaker for the annual fundraiser is Dr. Sandeep K. Jain, director of the UPMC Passavant Electrophysiology Laboratory and associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The ball, set for 6 to 11 p.m. Feb. 23 at Avalon Country Club at Buhl Park in Hermitage, benefits the American Heart Association, Mercer County division. Guests enjoy a lavish dinner, music, dancing and live and silent auctions. Registration for tickets closes Feb. 15.

The Hoodins, of Sharpsville, and their committee members are hoping to raise more than $125,000 to support heart and stroke medical research, as well as public and professional education programs.

“There has been substantial progress in heart disease research due in part to the American Heart Association,” Hoodin said. “I am happy to support the organization.”

Mrs. Hoodin is particularly passionate about raising awareness of heart disease.

“The key to early detection is education,” she said. “As a registered nurse, I realize the importance of increasing public awareness and promotion of a healthy lifestyle to save lives.”

Dr. Jain, a cardiologist with the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology. He earned his medical degree from Northwestern University, Chicago, and completed an internal medicine residency and fellowships in cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo.

A fellow in the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society, Jain is a member of the American Heart Association with clinical and research interests in mechanisms of sudden cardiac death and advanced therapies for atrial fibrillation.

According the the American Heart Association, an estimated 81 million American adults – more than one in three – have one or more types of cardiovascular disease.

This year an estimated 785,000 Americans will have a new or first-time heart attack and about 470,000 will have a recurrent attack.
