Tomato and garlic festival set for Sunday

PITTSBURGH — Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh is hosting the fifth annual “Red, Ripe and Roasted,” a tomato and garlic festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The free daylong event focuses on the fruit and the fragrant seasoning with cooking demonstrations, information from environmental groups and kid-friendly activities.

Participants may take a bag of produce to donate to the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank to receive free admission to Phipps’ indoor gardens. The front lawn of Phipps will host a farmers’ market and there will be treats for sale in the cafe. Enon Valley Garlic will offer bulbs. Home gardeners may compete for prizes for biggest, smallest and ugliest tomatoes.

Sharon Regional Wound Center sets open house

HERMITAGE – The Advanced Wound Recovery Center of Sharon Regional Health System, 2425 Garden Way, Hermitage, has scheduled an open house for 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Aug. 28. The open house will highlight the center’s Hyperbaric Department and arrival of its second Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber.

The open house will offer tours and a chance to meet the staff and learn about the newest approaches in advanced wound treatment. A light lunch will be provided.

Through hyperbaric oxygen therapy, patients breathe 100-percent oxygen in an enclosed, pressurized system that delivers oxygen quickly and in high concentrations to wounds that haven’t healed in 30 days.

Oil 150 parade could draw 20,000 to Titusville

TITUSVILLE — Organizers of a festival celebrating the birth of the nation’s oil industry expect the tiny city of Titusville to be overrun by spectators for a parade Aug. 29.

Titusville has a population of 6,000, but Oil 150 organizers expect about 20,000 people to attend the parade along a 1.7-mile route. The Oil 150 celebration commemorates the 150th anniversary of the nation’s oil industry, which began with Col. Edwin Drake’s successful oil well on Aug. 27, 1859, in Titusville.

Stormwater management seminar for landowners

COOLSPRING TOWNSHIP — Mercer County Conservation District will host a riparian buffer and stormwater management seminar from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Sept. 10 at Munnell Run Farm, a mile north of Mercer on state Route 58 in Coolspring Township. Presenters from the state Department of Environmental Protection, Penn State Cooperative Extension and Ernst Conservation Seeds will instruct farmers, municipal officials, homeowners and other landowners about the benefits of riparian, or stream bank, buffers and other stormwater management practices.

The seminar, funded by a Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts grant, is free and lunch will be provided. Space is limited to the first 50 registrants. Registration deadline is Sept. 3 at 724-662-2242.
