Fundraisers

• Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 100 Penn Ave., Mercer, holds fish fry dinners from 5 to 7 p.m. this Friday and March 19, 26 and April 2 in Gallagher Hall. Menu includes fried fish, fries, mac and cheese, cole slaw, bread and butter, coffee, tea, lemonade and homemade cake. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Children ages 3 and younger are free. akeouts will cost .25 cents more.

• The Democratic Women of Mercer County are hosting a Spuds and Suds Dinner and Auction from 6 to 9 p.m. March 24 at The Wave Italian Restaurant in Sharon.The community is invited for a fun night of socializing. A baked potato bar filled with all of your favorite ‘tater toppings for your spuds and taste buds’ and an array of home brews and tap brews will be offered. Duke Whiting will auction off local services to provide bidders with a variety of random specialized options such as gourmet meals or gutter cleaning. Come out have fun, support our inaugural fundraiser and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.Tickets are $15 each and $25 for couples and can be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting Marci Radcliffe, 724.813.735 or any other member of the DWMC. • East Side Church, 201 Spruce Ave., Sharon, serves a roast beef dinner from 4 to 6:30 p.m. March 27.

Dinner includes roast beef, potato, vegetable, salad, beverage and dessert. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children age 11 and younger. Takeouts available. Tickets, call 724-981-4223.

• A benefit spaghetti dinner, in loving memory of Carolyn Ashley McVehil, is set for 2 to 6 p.m. March 27 at the Wheatland American Legion Post 432. Menu includes, pasta, meatballs, salad, bread and butter, beverage and dessert.

Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger. Tickets: Rachael, 724-685-6000 or Christina, 724-301-9571. All proceeds will be donated to her daughter, Alea Mercedes.

• The Men’s Organization of Kinsman Presbyterian Church will host a roast beef dinner from noon to 2 p.m. March 21 at the church, 6383 Church St., across from the Public Library. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 12 and younger and will be sold at the door. Proceeds will benefit mission projects. Info: 330-876-4485.

• The GFWC Grove City Woman’s Club will be making apple dumplings on March 18.

Meetings

• Mysteries And Paranormal Society Pennsylvania Paranormal/Ghost Hunting group will meet at 7 p.m. Saturday, (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at Sharon City Building. Special guest will be Janet Buzzeo who will talk about local historical truths, amazing treasures and haunted places of old-time Mercer County. Admission is $5. • Hickory High School class of 1960 meets for lunch at 11:30 a.m., March 20, 2010, at Ferrara’s Restaurant, 1208 Hall Avenue, Sharon. A short meeting for the reunion committee will follow.

• Sharon High School class of 1942 gathers for lunch at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Panera Bread, Hermitage.

• New Wilmington Area AARP 3954 meets at Challenges, Shenley Square in New Castle on March 25. Board meeting at 12:30 p.m. followed by regular meeting at 1 p.m. Irish customs and music will be the entertainment.

• Shenango Valley Pennwriters is sponsoring a workshop for writers from 1 to 4 p.m. March 20 at the Community Library of the Shenango Valley, downtown Sharon. Catherine McLean, a published member of Pennwriters, Inc. and a nominee for Meritorious Service Award in Area One, will conduct the free seminar. Attendees may bring two to three pages of their work for the critique session. The seminar will focus on how to write a story, from characters that grab a reader to plots on how to keep them reading. SVP is a member group of Pennwriters, Inc., a statewide organization with more than 450 members, dedicated to helping writers improve and succeed in their craft.

• Shenango Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1338 will hold nominations of post officers at 8 p.m. April 6. Elections will be held at 8 p.m. May 4 at the V.F.W.



Support group

• Mercer County Chapter Parents of Murdered Children, Inc., for families and friends of those who have died by violence, meets from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday and the second Saturday of each month at UPMC Horizon, 2200 Memorial Blvd., Farrell. Info: 724-877-1552 or 724-877-3130.

Special events

• All residents and business owners of Mercer and surrounding townships are invited to a “Take a Bite Out of Crime in Your Home or Community” from noon to 2 p.m. March 27 at East End Volunteer Fire Hall, Mercer. Trooper Ronald Keston of Pennsylvania State Police will speak on public and private safety tips. He will answer questions and will also give information on how to start a neighborhood crime watch in your community. Lizette Olsen from AWARE will also be in attendance. Seating is limited.

• Buhl Farm park will hold its annual clean-up day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 10.

Volunteers will register at the pool house and refreshments will be served throughout the day. Bring gloves and a rake and help support the Hermitage park. Students needing community service are encouraged to attend. In case of rain, April 17 will be the alternative date.

• The kettle will be on from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. every first and third Tuesday of the month at the Hour of Power Founders Hall, 1126 Fruit Ave., Farrell. Free meals will be prepared for the hungry. Come and bring your children and enjoy what’s in the kettle.
