Jennings center offering maple sugaring programs


SLIPPERY ROCK — Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, has scheduled maple sugaring programs this month as part of its Winter/Spring 2010 season. Events include:

• March 23-26 — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., “Maple Sugaring for School Groups.” Maple sugaring programs will be offered hourly at 10 and 11 a.m. and 1 and 2 p.m. for 1st through 6th grade school groups. They will include the historical, biological and cultural aspects of the sugar bush. Schools should contact the center at 724-794-6011 for reservations or more information.

• March 27 — 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., “Maple Sugaring for Scouts.” Maple sugaring programs will be conducted for all Scouts between the ages of 7 and 11. Enrollment is limited. Leaders must register their Scouts for the morning or afternoon session by calling the center at 724-794-6011 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $1 per Scout.

• March 28 — 2 to 3:30 p.m., “Maple Sugaring.” A presentation beginning indoors and moving outside for a guided walk will show how a tree works and demonstrate the art of maple sugaring from past to present. The program will feature a working evaporator and a taste of real maple syrup.
