Fundraisers

• Hickory United Methodist Church, 240 N. Hermitage Road, next to Shenango Valley Mall, plans a good used clothing sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 1 and 9 to 11:30 a.m. May 2. Bargain $1-per-bag day is May 2.

• Mercer County Master Gardeners’ annual plant sale is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9 at Leslie N. Firth Learning Center, U.S. Route 19, north of Mercer.

Annuals, perennials, vegetables, grasses, herbs, ornamental grasses, dwarf and ornamental conifers and trees will be available, as will garden-related items. Master Gardeners will be available to answer gardening questions.

• The Spring Hymn Sing to benefit Lakeview Area Helping Hands Inc. will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 3 at Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church, 3461 Sandy Lake-New Lebanon Road, state Route 173, north of Sandy Lake.

Any church choir or individual who would like to perform is invited to register by April 28 with Sherry Reynolds at 724-376-7175, Judy Irwin at 724-253-3591, or Marilyn Griffin at 724-376-7175.

• A roast beef dinner will be served from noon to 4 p.m. May 17 at Jerusalem Lodge 19 Hartford Masonic Temple, corner of State Route 305 and State Route 7.

Meal includes: roast beef, mashed potatoes, vegetable, German carrots, bread, noodles, coleslaw, beverage adn dessert.

Cost is $8 for adults; $4 for children ages 10 and younger; and children younger than age 3, are free. Takeouts available.

• Hartford Fire Association along with Burghill Vernon Fire Department will be having a pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the old Hartford Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, located on Hartford Five Points Road in Hartford Township.

Cost is $6 for adults; $5 for seniors; $4 for kids ages 5- to -12-years-old; and children younger than age 5 are free.

Breakfast includes pancakes, French toast, eggs and sausage, sausage gravy over biscuits, milk, orange juice coffee and tea.

Takeouts available.

• The Second Annual Oral Cancer Walk is scheduled for Saturday in Buhl Farm park, Heritage. Registration fo the “Walk and Rock for Oral Cancer,” begins at 10 a.m. and walk begins at 11 a.m.

It is approximately 2.5 miles, once around the park.

Each registered walker receives a free T-shirt; tote bag filled with goodies; free concer by “Groove Clinic,” and free lunch provided by Marchelloni’s. There will be raffles, gift certificates and gift baskets.

All proceeds will be given to the Oral Cancer Founation to raise awareness and conduct research.

Special events

• New Wilmington Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the Mother’s Day Shop Hop from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1 and 2. Pick up entry forms at any participating business, collect the stamps and be eligible to win the grand prize gift basket worth more than $600.

Free goodie bags will be available at The Pointe for the first 50 shoppers each day.

• Mercer Area Library, 143 N. Pitt St., will hold its fourth annual Women’s Night Out at 7 p.m. Monday. This social evening will include dessert, special book displays and two presentations.

Shelly Thompson will present “Decorating On a Budget.” Learn to decorate your home without breaking the bank. Robert Butchy will speak on “Tea 101,” introducing different types of teas and their restorative properties. Seating is limited to 50, so stop in for your free ticket. A door prize drawing will be held. Info: 724-662-4233.

• “Over the Rainbow” is the theme for this year’s May Ball 2009, set for 6 to 9 p.m. May 15 at Chavers Community Center, 211 Federal St., Farrell. Grand march at 6 p.m.

The event is for those ages 7 to 12 only.

Cost is $15 per couple or $7.50 per child. Refreshments will be served. Boutonnieres are $1.50 for boys; and corsages are $2.50 for girls. You must call the center ot order.

• Complimentary skin care and make up consulting will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Grand Ballroom of Juniper Village at the Shenango Inn, 1330 Kimberly Road, Sharon. Door prizes and light refreshments served. Info: 724-347-4000 Ext. 130. 

Health

• Dr. Dave Shelton Atteberry, a neurosurgeon and spine specialist with the University of Pittsburgh Physicians Department of Neurological Surgery, will present “Back Pain: To Fuse or Not to Fuse, That is the Question,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 5 at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon, 875 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage.

Surgical treatment options for back pain vary from decompression surgeries to fusion procedures to motion-sparing operations. Atteberry will give a brief history of various types of back and leg pain treatments. The program is free. Refreshments will be provided. Registration: 724-347-7700 or 866-347-7700.

• Sharon High School class of 1960 meets for brunch at 11 a.m. April 25 at The Cookery, Route 18, Hermitage. All classmates welcome.
