Senior centers announce October activities


MERCER COUNTY — Mercer County Senior Centers, divisions of Mercer County Area Agency on Aging Inc., announce activities for October.

Transportation is available to and from the centers. Reservations must be made by 2 p.m. the day before the service is needed. Call Mercer County Community Transit at 800-222-8797 or 724-981-6222.

All centers are closed Oct. 13 for Columbus Day.

Shenango Valley

Shenango Valley Senior Community Center, 220 N. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage:

Autumn activities include Oktoberfest bingo with extra prizes and games at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 22; Halloween pumpkin decorating, Oct. 23; Senior Singers in autumn concert at 11 a.m. Oct. 27; and a Halloween party on Oct. 31 with Trick-or-Treat Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and a magic show with Ray Witkowski at 11 a.m.

• Oct. 29 — 11 a.m., “Learn the Nutritional Value of the Foods You Eat” with Mike Libby of Sharon Regional Health System.

Computer classes with Chuck Roberts are held for beginners, 9:30 to 11 a.m., and intermediate, 1 to 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sign up with the receptionist for eight classes, $30.

Sandy Lake

McQuiston Center by the Park, 29 Railroad St.:

AARP Senior Safe Driving classes with Ron Lockwood are set for 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 8 and 9, with a four-hour refresher course Oct. 23 for those who have taken the class within the last three years. The fee is $10 a person. Upon completion, drivers qualify for a discount on car insurance. To register, call 724-376-3608.

Seniors will leave the center at 8:30 a.m. Friday for an Applefest field trip to Franklin. Breakfast is optional with departure time of 1:30 p.m. from Franklin. The fee is $2. Sign up at the registration table.

Seniors will leave the center at 11 a.m. Oct. 16, with stops at Tops Buffet in Hermitage for lunch, followed by a tour of O’Neill Coffee Co., West Middlesex. Sign up for transit. The fee is $3.

A fall food tasting event will be held Oct. 17. Take samples to share.

A Halloween party is set for Oct. 31 with coffee and doughnuts, 8:30 a.m.; costumes, 9:45 a.m.; and Halloween fun, 11:15 a.m.

Grove City Senior Community Center, 301 S. Broad St.:

Oaisis Dancers will hold a performance at noon Oct. 9.

On Oct. 20, a flu shot clinic will be held in the center from 10:15 a.m. to noon by Grove City Medical Center, with a pizza party lunch at 12:15 p.m.

State Rep. Dick Stevenson’s Senior Expo is slated for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Physical Learning Building of Grove City College.

Greenville Senior Center, 339 E. Jamestown Road, West Salem Township:

Applications for a $40 coupon off the price of a digital TV conversion box are available in the center.

The center is accepting unused items to offer in the holiday gift shop.

No lunch or activities will be held in the center on Oct. 10.

Seniors will travel Oct. 13 to Presque Isle Downs, Erie, with departure at 9:30 a.m. from Anderson Coach and Travel and 9:40 a.m. from Greenville House, with return at about 6:15 p.m. The cost of $27 includes a $5 food coupon and $20 casino cash. Call 724-588-3155.

Jeff Greenburg, director of Mercer County Registration and Elections, will present a public program, “Touch Screen Voting,” at 11:15 a.m. Oct. 17 in the center. Refreshments will be provided.

A Halloween social with costumes, lunch, treats and more will be held Oct. 31.

“Winter Safety for Seniors,” a Prime Time Health Public Education Program will be presented at 11 a.m. Oct. 23 in Tushim Manor, 20 Coolspring St., Mercer; and 11:15 a.m. Oct. 30 in the Greenville center. Ellen Perry, gerontologist, will speak on preparing for the cold, weather emergencies, injury and fall prevention, snow and ice removal tips and avoiding mistakes that can lead to house fires.

Other special health information sessions include Oct. 6, “Get Smart About Salt: Low Salt Dining” with samples; and Oct. 9, “Encyclopedia Popcornica” with samples.
