Summerfest 2008 planned in Farrell



FARRELL — City of Farrell Summerfest 2008 will continue today through June 14 in collaboration with the Juneteenth celebration.

These events will be from 7 to 10 p.m.:

• June 12 — Farrell’s Jerry Chiodo and Bob Thomas performing oldies.

• June 13 — Gospel night featuring local church choirs and mime and dance teams.

A youth talk show, gospel singing, karaoke and a father-and-son look-a-like contest will be June 14, the 14th annual Juneteenth celebration. A parade will be at 9:30 a.m. that day. All events will be at Veterans Square and Municipal Complex grounds, Farrell.

Fun Zone Entertainment will provide amusement rides. Farrell Recreation Commission and Minority Health Center are event sponsors.

Lakeview library helping 'Catch Reading Bug'



SANDY LAKE TOWNSHIP — “Catch the Reading Bug” will be the summer reading program theme at Lakeview Area Public Library. Children may register from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays in the library; and during Sandy Lake Days, June 13 and 14 in Sandy Lake Borough Building’s community room.

The summer reading will begin with a picnic from 9:30 to 11 a.m. June 18 in McQuiston Park, Sandy Lake.

The summer reading program will be every Wednesday through July 23. The last day will include presentation of “Wish Upon a Butterfly.”

A Painted Lady butterfly can be purchased for $5 through the library and picked up by July 23. Butterflies will be released at 11 a.m. Funds will support the program and give children a chance to watch a butterfly grow from the cocoon stage into an adult.

Buhl Day Art Show set, seeking entries



HERMITAGE — Buhl Day Art Show will be Sept. 1. All entries are to be dropped off between 2 and 8 p.m. Aug. 30 in the Activities Building of Buhl Farm in Hermitage.

Each artist can enter three pieces of artwork with a $5 cost for each entry. Cost must be paid when dropping off the work, which must be display-ready.

Categories are professional, non-professional, photography and youth.

School teachers are asked to encourage participation by their students before the school year ends. Artwork will be judged in first through third places in each category for a cash prize, Best of Show prize and honorable mentions. Previously entered art will not be accepted. Nominate honorees for sprucing up public space

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society along with the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful alliance would like to acknowledge and recognize beautification efforts that have resulted in improved community green spaces. If you know of a group that has spruced up a local park, business, church, school, library or other public space, nominate them by July 15. A panel of experts will visit the site in August and evaluate it for plant variety, use of space and overall horticultural practices.

Meadville Council on Arts sets summer camps



MEADVILLE — Second- through ninth-graders can take part in Meadville Council on the Arts’ Summer Arts & Enrichment Camp from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. weekdays in June and August on the second floor of the Meadville Market House, 910 Market Street.

Native American art and music will be June 16 through 20; art of mask making, July 14 through 18; art around the world, July 21 through 25; and fun with the arts, Aug. 11 through 15. A reception for all students will be at 3 p.m. Aug. 15. There are costs. The Native American class will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
