Special events

• Mercer Area Library will hold their Third Annual Women’s Night Out at 7 p.m. April 28.

This social evening will include desserts, special book displays and two presentations. Debbie Thompson of Nelson’s Flowers will speak on “Fresh Flower Arranging: and Marilyn Stevens of Marilyn’s English Country Victorian will present “Shabby Chic Decorating.”

A question and answer period will follow. Seating is limited, so its necessary to stop in for your free ticket. There will be a door prize. Info: 724-662-4233.

• Due to the increasing cost of food, The Brandy Springs Senior Center scheduled Floy Moreira, a master gardner, to demonstrate how to raise vegetables in a pot on one’s deck at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Floy will show the equipment and supplies needed. Also the center council will discuss summer outings, tours, picnics and camping.

On April 23 Nancy Ollinger will enlighten the group on Historical events with her talk “Places Long Gone.”

Anyone interested is invited to attend. Each is speaking from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., if staying for lunch please call 724-662-1010.

• The Stoneboro Garden and Preservation Society holds Posies and Plants in the Park plus lunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 10.

Plants for Mother’s Day, hanging baskets, vegetable plants and shrubs will be available. Olde Tyme Stoneboro Ladies Auxiliary will have chili dogs and beverage available.

• Centennial Place presents “A Family Affair” from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday in the E.J McCluskey gymnasium of Farrell Area School District.

There will be health screenings, educational information, employment resources and refreshments.

• New Beginnings Christian Church, Delaware Township, is having a family skate night from 6 to 8 p.m. April 27 at Papa Wheelys, 3087 Hadley Road, Hadley.

Admission is free. You can bring your own roller blades or skates or rent them for $1.

• All West Middlesex Alumni are invited to the Annual Spring Banquet May 10 in the West Middlesex High School Commons.

This year’s special guests will be the class of 1958.

• Linda Armstrong will discuss the legends and myths of quilts used in the Underground Railroad at the quarterly meeting of the Jamestown Area Historical Society at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Marina, Pymatuning State Park. The event is held in conjunction with the Jamestown Garden Club. Directions: 724-932-3142.

• The Spring Hymn Sing to benefit the Helping Hands Center in Stoneboro is set for 6:30 p.m. May 4 at Stoneboro United Methodist Church, 32 Lake Street, Stoneboro.

• Empowerment training for parents of children who may be in need of, or are already receiving behavioral health services. This meeting will provide information on how to access behavioral health services for children and adolescents, as well as answer any question for families already involved in services. For the convenience of  families the meeting will be offered in two locations on two different dates. 

April 30 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hermitage City Building, room 303, 800 N. Hermitage Road. 

May 6 5:30 to 7:30 at Mercer County Behavioral Health Commission, 8406 Sharon-Mercer Road, Mercer.

Fundraisers

• Zion’s United Church of Christ, Transfer, is having a chicken noodle soup lunch and sale from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Lunch includes soup, salad bar, homemade pie and beverage. Soup will be sold by the quart for $4 or 3 quarts for $11.

• Shenango on the Green, 150 Waugh Ave., New Wilmington is having a flea market and furniture sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 26 in the garage.

Benefits the SPSC Benevolence Fund and the SOG Residents Association.

• Oral Cancer Walk where for $1 you can put your name or someone’s name that you love or have lost on a footprint to show everyone that you support oral cancer research is April 26. Stop in to sign up at the office of Dr. Dale Spadafora, 752 Brookshire Drive, Hermitage.

Meetings

• Greenville High School class of 1946 meets for breakfast at 9:30 a.m. April 24 at The Brass Lantern, Transfer.

• Former W.T. Grant employees, retirees and friends gather at 1 p.m. April 24 at Denny’s Restaurant, Hermitage.

• Farrell High School class of 1959 will hold a 50th class reunion planning meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Farrell Italian Home. All classmates are urged to participate.



Support groups

• Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets at 7 p.m. Thursday at Grace Chapel Church, 120 Elm Ave., Sharon.

• Mercer County Chapter Parents of Murdered Children, Inc., will have their Crime Victim’s Rights Week beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at the Sharon City Building, Connelly Boulevard, Sharon. Info: chapter leader, Genell Cozart, 724-342-9778.

Sign-ups

• Challenger’s Cheer Center announces that team sign-ups for the 2008/09 Annual All-Star Cheerleading Competition will be held April 22-24 at the Trailblazer Building, 100 W. Ridge Ave., Sharpsville. Also offered are instruction for competitive team cheerleading for grades K through 12; individual classes for junior and senior high cheerleader tryouts and weekly open gym for gymnastics on Wednesdays. Health

• Dr. Brian Spencer will discuss facts and myths about common foot problems at 6 p.m. April 22 at the Grove City Medical Center. He will also highlight new techniques and surgical options available to keep feet healthy and happy. A question and answer session will follow the program, which is free and open to the public.

Trained at Ohio State University and Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Spencer completed his residency at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was chief resident. Dr. Spencer is a board-certified foot surgeon and a certified wound care specialist. He has completed advanced training in geriatric foot care, foot and ankle trauma, flatfoot reconstruction, heel pain and foot infections.

• Sharon Regional Health System holds free hearing screenings from 10 a.m. to noon April 21 at the Diagnostic & Imaging Center, Garden Way, Hermitage.

Audiologist Thomas Baranek will perform the screens.
