JAMESTOWN — A Jamestown woman became a big winner Friday on a TV game show without even leaving home.
“It still boggles our minds,” said Darla Wood, who won $10,000 and a 2008 Ford Mustang while watching the NBC game show “Deal or No Deal.”
“I just know somebody was looking out for me that night,” said Mrs. Wood, who along with her husband Bob tries to catch the show “every time its on.”
As she always does when the show airs, Mrs. Wood said she played the “Lucky Case game” — a home giveaway portion of the show where viewers enter numbers online for a chance at a prize.
The home contestants are then entered into a drawing in which only a few lucky people are picked as winners.
“Just think of the odds,” said the elated winner, still surprised days later. Lucky Case prizes on the show have ranged from $10,000 to $1 million, the show’s Web site says.
A producer from the show called her home to inform her she had won.
“Because of all the scams that go on I was a little leery,” but later was assured it was legit, she said.
Mrs. Wood said she was still in shock when she saw her name cross her TV set as a winner.
“In all the times we watched it we’ve never seen anybody win it out of Pennsylvania,” she said.
The couple hasn’t made any plans of how they’ll spent the money, but they do have enough space for the new car in their garage.
The black and pink Mustang convertible was an added giveaway Friday as part of a breast cancer awareness edition of the show, Mrs. Wood said.
The show’s famed models were also all dressed in identical pink dresses to raise awareness, she added.
Following the show, Mrs. Wood and her husband received congratulatory calls from friends, neighbors and even Jamestown Mayor Esther McClimans.
An NBC producer told Mrs. Wood the car likely won’t be delivered for about 90 days. It’s likely one of only a few made specifically for the breast cancer theme, she said.

Old school
Generations of students learned to read and write in the Hutchinson School, a one-room schoolhouse on Mitchell Road in Shenango Township. Today, historians hope those students’ descendants step forward to furnish and refurbish the small, red brick school to its former glory.
