Badger student wins top Strimbu scholarship; 10 others also honored

MERCER COUNTY AREA — Local high school seniors were honored with Leadership Scholarships during the 17th annual Strimbu Memorial Fund barbecue dinner in Yankee Lake Ballroom.

The Strimbu Memorial Fund was founded in 1990 to honor Nick Strimbu Jr.

During his life, he developed a legacy of leadership, self-reliance and service.

A $10,000 Leadership Scholarship is awarded to the outstanding high school senior from 10 local school districts who demonstrated scholarship, leadership and self-reliance.

This year’s recipient is Hannah Kathleen Miller, daughter of Aaron and Melissa Miller, Kinsman.

The Joseph Badger High School student plans to study political science at Dennison University.

Students receiving $1,000 awards are:

• April Marie Scudere is a daughter of Anthony and Barbara Scudere, Fowler.

A student at Brookfield High School, she plans to attend Westminster College to study secondary education.

• Allyson Kelly Smoot, daughter of Riley and Cheryl Smoot, Farrell, is a Farrell High School student.

She plans to major in marketing and merchandise management at Kent State University.

• Kyle R. King, son of Dale and Debra King, Greenville, is a student at Greenville High School.

He plans to attend Mercyhurst College to study English.

• Christina Ann Horsman, Hermitage, is a student at Hickory High School.

The daughter of William and Carole Horsman plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh to study pharmacy.

• Leanne Marie Magestro, daughter of Dion and Linda Magestro of Masury, is a student at Kennedy Catholic High School in Hermitage.

She plans to major in preveterinary at Mercyhurst College.

• Denise Nicole Wright, Sharon, is a Sharon High School student.

The daughter of Milton and Pamela Wright, Sharon, plans to attend Kent State University to study magazine journalism.

• Sheila Marie Gross, daughter of Richard and Andrea Gross, Sharpsville, is a Sharpsville High School student.

She plans to major in English at Penn State University.

• Charity Rose McDonald, Transfer, is a student at Reynolds High School. The daughter of Keith and Mary McDonald plans to study management at Case Western Reserve.

• David Mark McClelland, son of Dean and Adrienne McClelland of West Middlesex, is a student at West Middlesex High School.

He plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology for a degree in engineering.

• Katie Lynn Radkowski, daughter of Paul and Judith Radkowski, West Middlesex, is a student at West Middlesex High School.

She plans to attend Xavier University for a degree in pre-med.

She received the $500 Angelo and Jenny Mastrian Charitable Trust Essay Award.

In addition to receiving the scholarship awards, each participant received a plaque commemorating the works of Nick Strimbu Jr.

Since 1991, the Strimbu Memorial Fund has contributed $45,000 for the Newspaper in Education programs that benefit local school districts; $62,500 to United Way; more than $215,000 to local area economic development organizations; more than $93,500 to the Shenango Valley Foundation Unrestricted Fund for a wide variety of charitable purposes; $100,000 to Buhl Park’s projects; and in excess of $189,000 in scholarship funds.

The contribution to these, other organizations, and families total more than $930,803.
