GE Transportation selling locomotive kits to China

GROVE CITY, ERIE — General Electric Transportation said Monday it reached a deal with CSR Qishuyan Locomotive Co. of China to provide 300 locomotive kits to provide 300 locomotive kits for China HXN5 Mainline.

No monetary value was given for the deal.

The kits, which will include GE Evolution Series locomotive engines produced in Grove City and Erie, will be shipped and then assembled in China by CSR Qishuyan.

The kits contain key components of the diesel engines and locomotive control systems. The first kits are scheduled for delivery at the beginning of 2010. This deal follows an order of 300 GE locomotives placed by China in 2005.

“China has been a vital partner to GE Transportation’s growth for close to 30 years,’’ said Lorenzo Simonelli GE Transportation’s president and chief executive officer. “We are looking forward to building on our mutually beneficial company-to-country partnership.’’

The agreement for the energy-saving locomotives helps to sustain close to 1,200 jobs in the U.S. The announcement was made as part of “GE’s Clean Technology Week in China’’ activities.

Since 2005 GE Transportation has generated $1.2 billion in sales by serving the Chinese marketplace. 

Nearly 3,500 Evolution Locomotives are operating in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, China, Australia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Egypt.
