UPDATE: Dead woman identified as Jean Black, 56, of Hubbard

SOUTH PYMATUNING TOWNSHIP — The body of a woman recovered by emergency personnel from Shenango River Lake near the Shenango Recreation Area about 11:30 a.m. today has been identified as 56-year-old Jean Black of Hubbard. She had been missing since Wednesday night. In addition to the woman, her two dogs were found dead as well. Authorities speculate she may been walking her dogs when one or both of them ran onto the ice and that she followed.

  • Hermitage man to be charged in Farrell shooting

    A 26-year-old Hermitage man is to be arraigned later today on multiple charges, including criminal homicide, in the shooting death of Andrew Walko, 44, of 824 Emerson Ave., Farrell. He was shot around midnight in the 800 block of Emerson Avenue. The Hermitage man was one of three who entered the home of Walko’s stepson on Emerson shortly before the shooting.

  • PNC branch by Walmart in Hermitage robbed

    The PNC bank branch on North Hermitage Road by Walmart in Hermitage was robbed this afternoon. Hermitage police alerted other departments to be on the lookout for a male, in his 30s or 40s, about 5-8, clean shaven but with long "shaggy" hair, and glasses,wearing a brown hoodie. The robbery was reported to Mercer County 911 at 2:48 p.m. Tuesday. It's the second time that the PNC branch was robbed in the city in a little more than two weeks. The other robbery was on Jan. 23.

  • Brookfield residents asked to boil water

    Trumbull County Sanitary Engineers issued an advisory for some Brookfield residents just west of the Sharon line to boil water after a break in a line. Engineers are recommending the boiling of water of at least three minutes before use.  Areas included are Warren-Sharon Road east of Valley View Drive, Lincoln Avenue, Yankee Run Road, Brookfield Avenue, Golf Drive, Wintergreen Drive and Spring Road.  The advisory was issued at 3 a.m. and may last until sometime Friday.

  • Storm closes office early

    The Herald office on Dock Street in Sharon is closing at 4 p.m. Wednesday due to the winter storm that is bringing heavy snowfall to the area.

  • 27 dead in Connecticut school shooting

    A gunman opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school Friday in a shooting that left 27 people dead, including 18 children, an official said.

    The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way.

  • Judge halts Pa.'s tough new voter ID requirement

    A judge on Tuesday blocked Pennsylvania's divisive voter identification requirement from going into effect on Election Day, delivering a hard-fought victory to Democrats who said it was a ploy to defeat President Barack Obama and other opponents who said it would prevent the elderly and minorities from voting.   • NCAA slams Penn State

    The NCAA has slammed Penn State with an unprecedented series of penalties, including a $60 million fine and the loss of all coach Joe Paterno's victories from 1998-2011, in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

    Other sanctions include a four-year ban on bowl games, and the loss of 20 scholarships per year over four years.

  • Penn State Abuse Stat_Rayk.jpg Paterno statue taken down, placed into storage

    The famed statue of Joe Paterno was taken down from outside the Penn State football stadium Sunday, eliminating a key piece of the iconography surrounding the once-sainted football coach accused of burying child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant.

    Workers lifted the 7-foot-tall statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium as the 100 to 150 students watching chanted, "We are Penn State."

  • Hermitage school board approves TIF in 7-2 vote

    Hermitage School Board Thursday reversed its earlier decision and approved a tax incremental financing plan for an Akron developer to put up a retail complex anchored by a Kohl's department store.
